1 EXT. SEEDY MOTEL ENTRANCE- MORNING 1

Early morning, a run-down Hollywood roadside motel. Two
levels of rooms surround a kidney shaped swimming pool. Red
leaves swirl across the water. Empty street outside, NO
TRAFFIC, no noise, peaceful.

LOLA (V.O.)
Sunday, the day of rest, but for
mother it was the busiest day of
the week. Mom said the guests left
during night, so in the morning we
worked, well... most of the time.
See we had a secret, Ivy and
me...and I had never beaten her.
But today was special...today was
the day we both married God.

A middle-aged Mexican woman in a maid uniform, MARICELA,
struggles to pull her cleaning cart out of the supply closet.
A DRY-CLEANING BAG and an old HAT BOX sit awkwardly on top of
the cart.

Maricela pulls hard on the cart handle.

MARICELA
Push, girls. Andale!

The cleaning cart leaps out of the closet, followed by two
young girls. IVY, 15, long bronze limbs, graceful, doe-like,
clenches the handle. LOLA, 8, chubby face, round belly
peeking out from her pink T-shirt, holds onto her sister's
waist.

Lola gives a push, not realizing the cart is clear. Ivy
moves to the side and Lola stumbles to the pavement.

MARICELA
Aye, Lola, stop goofing around!
Not today, okay.

Lola, tossed on her rear in the driveway, looks down out her
WHITE SHOES, shiny patten leather Mary Jane's. She sees the
PRICE TAG still fastened to the right strap...and a fresh
brown SMEAR on the left toe.

Ivy snickers.

IVY
Baby.

Lola rubs the dirt off the shoe with her palm.

2 EXT. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - ROOM 3 - MORNING 2

Maricela knocks on the door. She pauses a moment, listening
for a response.

Lola inspects her shoes then notices Ivy gaze down at the
pool...a layer of leaves blanket the top of the water.

Below, JESUS, 18, a Mexican boy in a blue jumpsuit, sleeves
rolled up over tattooed arms, holds a pool skimmer. He
shakes his head, frustrated...more leaves.

Maricela knocks again, no answer. Just as she unlocks the
door with her key...a HOOKER, tired eyes, smeared makeup,
pushes the door open from inside.

MARICELA
Excuse me, ma'am. We thought you
checked out.

The Hooker smiles at her politely, then swaggers down the
hall. The Hooker rummages in her purse, takes out a
cigarette, and pauses to light it. She takes a drag. Her
gaze lingers on the three of them. The Hooker smiles again.

Maricela shakes her head in disapproval and pushes Lola in
the room. Lola looks back at her sister.

Ivy stops for a moment, takes in the Hooker's lips, skirt,
high heels...she looks down again at Jesus, then enters the
room.

3 INT. ROOM 3 - MORNING 3

Maricela cleans the bathroom. Ivy and Lola make the bed.
This is their routine...they pull up the top sheet and flip
it back in unison. The girls place the top sheet under the
corners of the bed, then fold it back and under again like a
wrapped gift.

Ivy finishes her corner, it's perfect. Lola struggles, she
can't get it right.

IVY
Don't you know anything?

Lola tries again, but the fold slips out. Maricela comes
over and waves Lola away.

MARICELA
I've showed you a million times!

Maricela fixes it for her quickly, then inspects the bed for
errors.

MARICELA
Bien, Ivy...perfect.

Maricela bends down and checks under the bed...she spots a
USED CONDOM on the floor. She sees Lola's feet in the
background, white shoes with tag, on the other side of the
bed. She stands up, a bit flustered.

MARICELA
The pillow cases...make sure there
folded right.

Maricela signals for the girls to go get the pillow cases.
They start to leave, Maricela stops them.

MARICELA
Lola. The tag. And help your
sister this time okay.

Lola looks ashamed. The girls leave.

Maricela makes sure they are gone, then carries the condom to
the toilette and flushes.

4 INT. LAUNDRY ROOM - MORNING 4

Ivy folds the last clean pillow case. She places it on top
of the stack.

IVY
Perfect.

Lola stands next to her, not helping, foot propped up on the
counter. She saws the tag off her shoe with the laundry room
key. Lola scowls at Ivy.

LOLA
Today's my special day.

Ivy rolls her eyes. Lola storms out.

5 EXT. DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - MORNING 5

Lola stomps down the hall. She passes the pool supply
closet...the door is open. She stops, notices Jesus inside,
sitting on an overturned bucket, blue jumpsuit, NAME TAG
reads: "JESUS". A birdcage sits on a shelf under a window,
inside five tiny BIRDS flutter about.

Jesus carefully mends a rip in the pool skimmer with some
fishing line and a needle. Tattoo's cover his arms...skulls,
a grim reaper, sexy girls...and near his neck, a tiny blue
sparrow.

JESUS
They're wild...fell from their
nest.

Lola steps in to look at the birds.

JESUS
They trust me now. See.

He puts down his work and feeds a bird some seed from his
hand. She sits down on another bucket...she's likes it here.
She inspects the torn skimmer.

LOLA
You broke it?

JESUS
Snagged it on the rose bush.

LOLA
Was it your fault?

JESUS
Nah, an accident...it happens.

Lola smiles, comforted.

LOLA
You can fix it?

JESUS
Yeah...it won't pick up unless I
put it back together.

LOLA
Can I help?

JESUS
Sure, I'll hold it right here and
you thread it through.

She takes the needle and thread and leans in close to him.

LOLA
Like this?

She pushes the needle through the mesh. She smiles, proud of
her work. Jesus nods, impressed.

JESUS
Where's your sister?

Lola stops mending and looks at Jesus. She knows what he's
getting at. She pulls the thread hard against the
mesh...making the rip bigger. She glares at him, then storms
out.

6 EXT. SWIMMING POOL - MORNING 6

Lola sits at the edge of the pool, she looks at her chubby
legs in her new white shoes. She touches her toe to the
water. She watches a red leaf float by.

Ivy carries the stack of pillow cases across the patio. Lola
gives her "the look" from across the pool-"the challenge".
She plops the cases on the table, and picks up a BRICK from
the patio. Lola jumps up, searches for a brick, finds one.

The girls stand and face each other across the pool clutching
their bricks. Lola looks at her sister; beautiful long hair,
brown, slim body.

They jump in the pool.

7 EXT. UNDER WATER - MORNING 7

They sink to the bottom. They hold the bricks on their laps,
crossed-legged... a stand off.

Lola struggles, ugly face, chubby cheeks full of air. Ivy's
long dark hair floats angelically, framing her lovely face.

Lola stares at her sister, cheeks bulging. Ivy smiles back,
serene. Lola squirms. She almost busts but holds on,
determined. She is just about to pop when...

...the torn POOL SKIMMER comes down and hits Lola on the
head. Lola rushes to the top and gasps for air.

Maricela stands above her and waves the pool skimmer,
furious. Jesus, by her side, taps his foot, semi-amused,
tattooed arms folded.

MARICELA
What are you doing? Get out of the
pool! Out now!

Ivy rises to the top...takes a graceful breath. Lola chokes
and sputters, like a wet rat.

The girls climb out, drenched. Lola sulks. Ivy smiles at
her rubbing in her victory.

MARICELA
What is this? What are you doing?

Ivy looks at Jesus, then Lola, she doesn't say a word. Lola
shrugs.

MARICELA
Lola! Your shoes!

Lola looks down at her new white shoes. They're soaked.

Jesus smiles. Ivy notices and gives her mother an innocent
look.

MARICELA
I can't believe you two...You are
useless today! Of all days! Go get
your sister ready.

Maricela shoves the dry cleaning bag and the hat box at Ivy.
Embarrassed, Ivy yanks her sisters hand and pulls her towards
an open door. Ivy looks back at Jesus.

The street noise picks up outside, A FEW CARS pass by.

8 INT. ROOM 8 - DAY 8

A dirty room...Budweiser cans and candy wrappers littered
about. The dry cleaner bag lies empty on the bed crumpled
next to the hat box.

Lola sits in a chair wearing a beautiful white lacy dress.
She holds her feet out in the air...the dress' white ruffles
flow down to the floor, the bottom brushes against the soiled
carpet. She points a blow dryer to her white shoes.

Ivy braids Lola's hair.

IVY
Say it. The Father will make you
say it.

Ivy tugs a lock of hair.

LOLA
I can't remember.

IVY
God...Lola!

Ivy braids Lola's hair a little tighter.

IVY (CONT'D)
Listen. Hail, Mary, full of
grace...The Lord is with Thee.

Ivy pulls the braid even tighter. Lola squirms.

IVY (CONT'D)
Blessed art Thou amongst women, and
blessed is the fruit of Thy womb,
Jesus.

Ivy tugs at the braid fiercely.

LOLA
Ouch!

IVY
Holy, Mary, Mother of God, pray for
us sinners, now and at the hour of
our death.

Ivy yanks the braid.

IVY (CONT'D)
Amen...now You say it!

Ivy finishes, admires her work. Lola thinks hard.

LOLA
I can't.

One of Lola's braids is crooked. Ivy looks pleased. Lola
rubs her head and points to the bed. Ivy hesitates, then
goes to the bed and opens the hat box...

...inside is a delicate white lace VEIL with tiny flowers
sewed on.

Ivy picks up the veil and holds it gently.

IVY
It's mine.

LOLA
Put it on me. Mama said you have
to share.

IVY
She bought it for me first, when I
was eight.

LOLA
The dress cost too much. She said
you have to share.

Ivy holds the veil tight, reluctant to hand it over.

IVY
But it's mine.

LOLA
I'll tell Mama. And I'll tell her
about you and Jesus.

Ivy stares at Lola, embarrassed. She takes the veil and goes
to the dresser. She rubs the lace into an old chocolate
wrapper, staining it. She shoves the veil at Lola.

Ivy grabs a half filled Budweiser from the dresser and forces
herself to take a sip.

She opens the door, TRAFFIC NOISE pours in. Ivy leaves,
slamming the door behind her.

9 EXT. SEEDY MOTEL ENTRANCE- DAY 9

Maricela and Lola at the hotel entrance, CARS WHOOSH by.

Maricela admires Lola. Lola holds the veil, covers it with
her hand, trying to hide the stain.

MARICELA
Mija...que linda, my girls.

Lola looks down at her shoes and smiles.

MARICELA (CONT'D)
You look as beautiful as Ivy did on
her communion day.

LOLA
Do I have to wear the veil?

MARICELA
Yes, mija, for the church...

Lola clenches the veil, her fist over the stain.

LOLA
Why?

MARICELA
It's tradition. You have to cover
your head for the ceremony. In the
old days, the women would hide
their hair because, well, it made
the men go crazy.

LOLA
Crazy?

MARICELA
Loco.

Lola laughs. Maricela checks her watch.

MARICELA (CONT'D)
Get Ivy. I'll get the car.

10 EXT. MOTEL HALLWAY - DAY 10

Lola skips down the hall, swinging the veil in her hand. She
passes Room 11. She pulls open the door...empty. Room
12...empty. Room 14...empty.

LOLA
(Calls out)
Ivy...Ivy...

Lola stops at Room 15 and puts her ear to the door.

11 INT. ROOM 15 - DAY 11

Lola walks into the room. She leaves the door open, LOUD
TRAFFIC.

Lola's white shoes on the dirty carpet...she steps over a
rumpled blue jumpsuit on the floor. Her white shoe brushes
the name tag...it reads "Jesus". Lola's fist clenches the
veil tight.

She looks up and sees Ivy and Jesus huddled together, naked
in the motel bed. Ivy covers herself with a sheet...her face
frozen, mortified.

Lola stands at the foot of the bed...she looks at Ivy...her
hair tousled, brushing her bare shoulder...then Jesus, the
little sparrow on his neck. Her eyes move down to his bare
chest...it's covered with a large tattoo of a saintly woman:
THE VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE (Virgin Mary). The life sinks from
Lola's body, defeated.

LOLA
Today is my special day.

Ivy and Jesus reach for their clothes. Lola grabs the veil
and runs out.

12 INT. ROOM 8 - DAY 12

The dirty room...Lola runs to the night stand and opens the
drawer. She grabs the little black BIBLE and places it on
the bed. She kneels in front of it and places her hands
together. She tries to remember the prayer.

LOLA
Hail Mary, the Lord is with thee
and...and...blessed is your fruit
and...pray for the sinners...and...

She throws the bible back in the drawer.

LOLA (CONT'D)
Shit!

She slams the drawer shut.

13 EXT. CHURCH ENTRANCE - DAY 13

Maricela rushes up the steps, dragging Lola by the hand up to
the church entrance. Ivy follows slowly behind. A few
excited children dressed in white gowns and veils line up
waiting to enter. Maricela puts Lola in the back of the
line.

MARICELA
Mija, your veil.

Lola holds the veil tight, reluctant to open her fist. Lola
stares Ivy down, infuriated. Ivy looks numb.

Maricela pries it from her hand and places the veil on her
head. She adjusts the lace and spots the stain. She looks a
Ivy, then back to Lola.

MARICELA (CONT'D)
Lola...how could you?

The line moves forward. Lola is forced into the church
before Maricela can stop her.

14 INT. CHURCH ISLE - DAY 14

The children march down the isle...little Brides of God.
Lola stands out, veil muddy in a sea of white. As she moves
to the front of the church, her eyes lock on a statue of the
Virgin Mary. Lola looks terrified, as if the Virgin's eyes
are following her.

15 INT. CHURCH PULPIT - DAY 15

The PRIEST places the communion wafer on Lola's tongue. She
returns to the pew and kneels with the other girls who say
their prayers obediently, eyes closed.

Lola, palms together, tries to say the prayer. She mouths
the words silently, but can't remember. She carefully opens
one eye and sneaks a peek at the Virgin Mary statue. She
whips back around quickly, afraid.

She stealthy turns the other way and scans the pews for
Maricela and Ivy. She spots them. Maricela looks
proud...Ivy, distant...a tear rolls down her cheek.

16 INT. CHURCH BATHROOM - DAY 16

Lola leans over the bathroom sink. She vigorously scrubs the
stain off the veil. She puts the clean veil back on her head
and turns around...

...Ivy stands behind her.

Ivy stares at Lola...Lola, radiant in her white ruffled
dress, long lace veil, shiny white shoes...it's as if Ivy
sees a younger, more innocent version of herself.

17 EXT. SEEDY MOTEL ENTRANCE - AFTERNOON 17

Maricela pushes the cart across the patio...she struggles
with the weight of it, tired, worn out. Ivy and Lola follow
behind, still in their church clothes.

MARICELA
Just three more.

They turn the corner.

18 EXT. DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - AFTERNOON - CONTINUOUS 18

They pass by the pool supply closet...the door is open.
Jesus feeds a bird some seed from his hand. Jesus stands as
they pass... he nods to Maricela.

JESUS
Senora.

MARICELA
Jesus. Your birds are
growing...you'll let them go, no?

JESUS
Si, senora.

Maricela nods to him, assertively. Lola ignores him and
follows after her Mom. She looks back at Ivy.

Ivy steps towards Jesus, gushing. He looks at her,
sad...then turns around goes back in the closet and shuts the
door.

19 EXT. ROOM 23 - AFTERNOON 19

Maricela knocks, puts her key in the lock and enters the
room. Just as Lola steps in...

...Ivy snatches the veil from her head and runs off. Lola
runs after her.

20 EXT. SWIMMING POOL - AFTERNOON 20

Ivy stands by the side of the pool holding a brick. She
wears the veil on her head.

IVY
It's mine.

Lola picks up a brick and goes to the other side of the pool.
Lola looks at her sister, she looks different...less
beautiful, less perfect. The TRAFFIC ROARS.

They jump in the water.

21 EXT. UNDER WATER - AFTERNOON 21

SILENCE...they sink to the bottom. Ivy's veil floats up, as
if it wants to stay above water.

Lola opens her eyes...calm, controlled. She looks at Ivy,
wild hair, stormy eyes...Ivy is far away, somewhere else.
Lola wedges her brick into the folds of her white dress,
determined.

She looks up at the sky...leaves cover the top of the water,
blocking the light.

LOLA (V.O.)
Today was the day we both married
God...

Ivy struggles, her breath rises up, she gulps it down.
Lola's face, peaceful, forgiving.

LOLA (V.O.)
...so I tried to remember the
prayer. And I thought about Mama,
and the church, and those hungry
little birds...I thought so hard.

Ivy reaches over and tries to pull the brick out of Lola's
lap. Lola holds on to it, tight. Ivy squirms and reaches
for it again.

The veil comes loose from Ivy's head and drifts up towards
the surface.

LOLA (V.O.)
And then it came to me...so
clear...every single word.

Ivy drops her brick and floats up after it.

LOLA (V.O.)
And I said it over and over and
over again...

Lola at the bottom, serene smile.

LOLA
...for Ivy.

Lola looks up...the leaves part, she sees the sunlight shine
through.

22 EXT. SWIMMING POOL - AFTERNOON 22

Ivy sits at the edge of the pool, the wet veil by her side.
Traffic gone, QUIET. Lola rises from the water, smooth. She
pulls herself up to the edge.

Lola and Ivy sit. They stare at the leaves in the pool.

Ivy gently picks up the veil and hands it to Lola. Lola
holds it for a moment...then takes the veil and places it
back on Ivy's head. She adjusts a strand of Ivy's
hair...runs her finger along the edge of the veil...until it
is just perfect.

Lola smiles at her sister...Ivy smiles back.

Ivy stands and picks up the pool skimmer...the tear is
mended.

She plucks a leaf from the water.
